Milimani Law Courts Principal Magistrate Geoffrey Onsarigo has approved a prosecution request to detain four police officers and two other suspects pending the completion of investigations into their alleged involvement in breaking into a stationary vehicle and stealing its contents.
The four officers will be held at Kayole Police Station for four days, while the other two suspects will be detained at Ruai Police Station until Friday, June 14, 2024, when their case will be mentioned.
The prosecution successfully argued that the officers, due to their specialized skills and positions, could potentially interfere with witnesses and obstruct the investigation process.
Further, the residences of the two additional suspects are unknown, making them flight risks.
The suspects are accused of theft from a locked motor vehicle, handling stolen property, and conspiracy to commit a felony.
The case has garnered significant attention due to the involvement of law enforcement personnel in criminal activities, raising concerns about integrity and accountability within the police force.
During the court proceedings, the prosecution emphasized the need for a thorough investigation to ensure that justice is served.
The prosecution argued that allowing the suspects to remain free could compromise the integrity of the investigation, given their potential to influence witnesses and tamper with evidence.
Magistrate Onsarigo’s decision to detain the suspects underscores the seriousness of the allegations and the importance of conducting a meticulous investigation.
The case will be mentioned again on June 14, 2024, at which point further details may emerge.
The detention of the suspects marks a significant step in addressing the alleged misconduct and ensuring accountability within the police force.
