Nairobi City County has suspended all excavations in the riparian lands across the city as a measure to cub life loss from the floods from the ongoing rains.
Giving an update on the number of families affected and the number of people who have lost lives due to flooding, Sakaja stated that all building construction approvals have been halted until the flooding situation across the city seizes.
“We have suspended all excavations in the county along the riparian lands and even for constructions across the County forthwith. We have also halted all pending building approvals for construction until further notice when the rains shall seize.” Sakaja stated.
The city administrator ordered the relocation of affected families to safe grounds where they will be directed by the county.
He asked Nairobians to be vigilant and safeguard themselves and their properties especially those bear the riverbanks of Nairobi.
The governor also directed that all the private garbage collectors should deposit the garbage collected at the Dandora Dumpsite and that any illegal dumping shall lead to cancellation of their license with immediate effect.
“All private garbage collectors should ensure that all waste is collected and taken to the Dandora Dumpsite. Any private Service Provider going against this shall be sanctioned.” Sakaja ordered.
On Monday, the Nairobi City County government ordered the residents living along riverbeds and high areas were ordered to relocate with immediate effect following various flooding cases in the city.
These directives came after Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja led a meeting with various agencies in response to the heavy rains that caused flooding and property damage over the weekend.
