There was jubilation in Kibera’s Laini Saba ward as residents celebrated the distribution of term one and two bursaries for school-going children.
The term one and two bursary issuance faced a backlog due to delay in implementation of the Supplementary budget.
The event, held on Saturday, August 10, 2024, at Laini Saba Grounds, brought joy to the community as over two thousand families received financial support.
Laini Saba Member of County Assembly (MCA), John Musila, spoke to journalists during the event, announcing the allocation of Ksh. 2.5 million in bursaries.
“I am delighted to share that our children will be returning to school as term three begins. Today, we have provided bursaries to over two thousand vulnerable families who applied. Many families in informal settlements struggle with inconsistent income, so this support has brought immense relief,” Kaende stated.
Musila, who also serves as the Deputy Minority Leader, expressed his gratitude to Governor Johnson Sakaja for ensuring the timely distribution of bursaries, preventing students from being sent home for unpaid fees.
“I want to thank the county executive, led by Governor Johnson Sakaja, and the county assembly leadership for their continued support, which has enabled us to deliver efficient services. The beneficiaries today include students in secondary schools, universities, colleges, and vocational training centers,” he added.
He emphasized that the bursary distribution was conducted fairly, with all eligible applicants receiving assistance.
He also highlighted efforts to enroll local youth in driving schools, such as Rocky Driving School, to enhance their employment opportunities after secondary education.
Mama Njoki, a parent with a child at St. Teresa Girls’ School, expressed her appreciation for the fairness in the bursary issuance process.
“The current economic situation is tough for those in informal settlements. We are grateful to the government and our ward representative for their dedication to ensuring efficient service delivery,” she said.
