Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has endorsed the appointment of Hassan Joho, the former Mombasa Governor and ODM deputy party leader, to the cabinet. President William Ruto nominated Joho as the Mining, Blue Economy, and Maritime Affairs Cabinet Secretary on Wednesday.
Joho’s appointment has been met with jubilation in the coastal region, with Sonko expressing strong support, stating that Joho’s qualifications and capabilities make him a fitting choice for the role.
Sonko believes Joho’s appointment will significantly boost ongoing development projects in the region.
“I fully support the appointment of my brother Hassan Joho, who is very qualified and capable of delivering to Kenyans,” Sonko stated. He added that Joho’s appointment would also help unify the region. “It is a good start for our region and also good for our future in the governance of the country.”
Sonko also praised the reappointment of Kindiki Kithure as the Interior Security Cabinet Secretary, highlighting Kindiki’s professionalism and competence. He noted, however, that Kindiki’s efforts were undermined by rogue police officers.
“Kindiki was very professional and knew how to handle protesters. He was only messed up by rogue officers who should face the full force of the law,” Sonko remarked. He urged the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) to expedite investigations and prosecute officers caught on camera killing innocent protesters.
Sonko cautioned against any form of handshake between President William Ruto and the opposition, stressing that recent appointments should not be used to weaken the opposition and its oversight role.
He also called on President Ruto to address concerns raised by Gen-Z protesters. “The Gen-Zs have done a wonderful job; they have won 90% of the battle, and we are fully behind them. The president needs to be easy and talk to them nicely,” Sonko advised.
