At least twelve people have been confirmed dead while several others have been evacuated to various hospitals for treatment after two separate tragic road accidents occurred along the Garissa-Mwingi road within the Katumba Trading Center area and Murang’a.
In the first fatal accidents occurred along Garissa-Mwingi road which happened at at 1:30 AM on Friday seven people were killed and it involved a passenger bus and another unidentified vehicle.
According to traffic police on the scene, Hassan Bura was driving a Nissan UD bus, registration number KCZ 604A, belonging to Al-Mukaram Bus Service Company.
The bus, carrying 50 passengers, was traveling from Garissa towards Nairobi.
While attempting to overtake an unidentified vehicle that did not stop after the accident, Bura tried to return to his lane to avoid a head-on collision.
In the process, the bus collided with a stationary Mercedes-Benz trailer, registration number KBW 788H/ZG 0936, which was stalled on the road due to a mechanical breakdown.
The trailer was ferrying gypsum from Garissa.
Meanwhile, traffic police officers are currently at the scene, and further details will be provided as the investigations continue.
In the second incident, in the Maragua area of Murang’a County, five other people were killed in yet another fatal accidents yesterday evening.
The incident happened at Kagumo along the Murang’a-Kenol road and involved a salon car and a truck headed for Murang’a.
The truck is said to have first hit the salon car forcing it off the road.
Five people who were on board died on the spot.
The five included the driver and four passengers.
Locals protested the accident and blamed speeding for the same.
They lit bonfires and demanded speed bumps be erected at the scene.
Police arrived there and pleaded with them saying they would take the message to the relevant authorities.
The bodies of the deceased were moved to the mortuary.
