Fish farmers in Uasin Gishu County have been urged to form cooperative societies to enhance their bargaining power and improve the efficiency of their farming operations.
Livestock and Fisheries Chief Officer, Nixon Cheplong, highlighted the importance of cooperatives during a fish feed distribution event, noting that collaboration would enable farmers to better leverage resources and increase profitability.
Cheplong stressed that fish farmers have been struggling due to the lack of collective efforts and encouraged them to unite for greater success.
He also emphasized the County Government’s support through the distribution of fingerlings, aimed at boosting aquaculture and driving local economic growth.
During the event, Cheplong praised Joan Jerotich, a 24-year-old fish farmer from Tapsagoi Ward, who has successfully turned fish farming into a lucrative business.
He urged other youth to follow her lead and explore aquaculture as a viable income source.
Director of Fisheries Edna Kemei underscored the need for continued investment in training and resources, stating that the distribution of fish feeds was a key step in promoting sustainable fish farming in the county.
