Zanzibar Beckons: Kabete Cares Baseball Team Seeks Support for International Showdown

By Shadrack Nyakoe

The Kabete Cares Baseball team, comprising 35 members, has been invited to Zanzibar for a series of friendly matches scheduled to take place from December 17 to 20. The invitation was extended by their hosts, the Golden Ovcas, marking a significant opportunity for the Kenyan team to showcase their skills on an international platform.

Head coach George Kinuthia, who is also a member of the Kenya Baseball Federation technical team, expressed enthusiasm for the trip. He highlighted its importance as part of the team’s preparations for upcoming international tournaments, including the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, USA.

“This event is crucial for us,” Kinuthia said. “It will not only give our players international exposure but also serve as a stepping stone for future national team selections.”

Kabete Cares, which includes both male and female players, has a strong track record in baseball. Last year, the team contributed four U12 and three U18 players to the Africa Qualifiers for the World Series held in Gilgil, Nakuru County.

However, the team faces a significant financial hurdle in making the trip a reality. Coach Kinuthia is appealing to well-wishers, corporates, and government entities for support to raise the Ksh. 1 million needed to cover travel and logistical expenses.

“We are appealing for funds to honor this important trip,” he said. “In countries like the United States and Japan, baseball is highly valued and widely played in schools, universities, academies, and recreational centers. Despite our challenges, we are committed to promoting and spreading the game in Kenya, especially in schools and institutional centers.”

Kinuthia added that the team plans to travel with 30 players—both boys and girls—and five officials, including a coach, team manager, and chaperone, depending on the availability of funds.

He called on Kiambu County Governor, the National Olympic Committee of Kenya, corporates, and other well-wishers to intervene and support the team’s mission.

This invitation to Zanzibar is a testament to Kabete Cares’ growing prominence in baseball, and with the necessary support, the team hopes to leave a lasting impression on the international stage.
