The Kenya National Police DT SACCO has been lauded for its exemplary performance during the 2025 International Co-operatives Day (National Ushirika Day) celebrations, taking home multiple top honors at a the 103rd International Day of Cooperatives awards ceremony held at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) in Nairobi.
The SACCO was recognized as the Second Best Performing Employer-Based DT SACCO in the country, a significant accolade in a category previously known as “Best Managed SACCO.” According to the Cooperative Alliance of Kenya, the rebranding of the award reflects a broader and more dynamic vision in line with the sector’s evolving aspirations and expectations.
The award ceremony was graced by senior government officials, including Prime Cabinet Secretary Hon. Musalia W. Mudavadi, Cabinet Secretary for Co-operatives and MSMEs Development Hon. FCPA Wycliffe A. Oparanya, Cabinet Secretary for Gender, Culture, the Arts and Heritage Hon. Hanna Cheptumo, and Principal Secretary for the State Department of Cooperatives Hon. Patrick Kilemi.
In his keynote address, Prime Cabinet Secretary Mudavadi emphasized the strategic importance of the cooperative movement in safeguarding Kenya’s economy.
“A robust cooperative movement anchors capital firmly in the hands of indigenous Kenyans, reducing dependency on foreign direct investment and ensuring economic resilience,” said PCS Mudavadi. “Capital knows no tribe. Through cooperatives, we dismantle social barriers, foster unity, and build a more inclusive nation.”
Receiving the award on behalf of the Kenya National Police DT SACCO were Director Elizabeth Nyaga, General Manager ICT & Business Innovations Frank Tirimba, and Marketing Manager Ann Njuguna. The leadership credited the win to the SACCO’s focus on excellence, innovation, and commitment to members’ financial well-being.
Themed, “Driving Inclusive and Sustainable Solutions for a Better World,” this year’s Ushirika Day celebration was described by Prime CS Mudavadi as a fitting reflection of the transformative power of Kenya’s cooperative sector.
Adding to its string of accolades, the SACCO also received recognition in three additional categories during the Ushirika Adjudication Dinner and Awards Ceremony:

These distinctions highlight the SACCO’s financial strength, prudent credit policies, and commitment to secure deposit management.
In his address to attendees, Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya underscored the critical role of cooperatives in economic development.
With more than 30,000 registered cooperatives across Kenya, Oparanya noted, millions of citizens rely on these institutions for access to affordable credit, job creation, housing, and healthcare.
“Under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), we are enhancing the capacity of cooperatives through access to affordable credit, value chain development, and the establishment of a KES 4.5 billion SACCO revolving fund,” CS Oparanya announced.
He added that ongoing reforms including the Cooperatives Bill 2024, amendments to the SACCO Act, and the creation of a Deposit Guarantee Fund—are aimed at improving sector transparency and efficiency. Oparanya also urged SACCOs to embrace digital innovation, strengthen governance, and promote youth and women in leadership, describing cooperatives as “pillars of Kenya’s economic transformation.”
Beyond financial services, the Kenya National Police DT SACCO has also taken a leadership role in community development, supporting education, infrastructure, and environmental sustainability initiatives.
The SACCO’s commitment to digital transformation has made financial services more accessible for members, enabling convenient, 24/7 access to their financial services.
As the SACCO continues to grow, its leadership reaffirmed their commitment to cooperative values and national development. The multiple awards are not only a testament to operational excellence but also a celebration of the tireless efforts of its members, Board of Directors, management, and staff.
