Can you tell us about yourself? I am a pr expert, entrepreneur and the founder Lindah Kiyeng Communications which is a pr firm based in Nairobi Kenya.
Can you explain what your organization does? So my company specialises in brand awareness, publicity, crisis management, persuasion, branding and so much more for our clients. We always make sure our clients and their products are always in the limelight and on people’s lips 24/7.
What is your company trying to achieve? My company has changed how people communicate and perceive brands in Kenya and abroad. We have been able to make our clients standout from the crowd.
What did you study in college and why did you choose to go down this career path? I studied IT in Strathmore and later Communications at St Paul’s University. The reason why I chose to do communications was because I knew it was an area I could be good at and I loved the whole concept of brand awareness and publicity since I was very young.
Did you have any ‘a-ha!’ moments that made you rethink your approach? Yes my road to where I am hasn’t been easy there were so many times I doubted myself but my biggest aha moment was realising that when things aren’t going as planned it means it is time to re-evaluate and try a new direction
What surprised you the most when putting this company together? The fun I have going to work everyday it is ultimate bliss for me
What do you know now that you didn’t know three years ago? There is no one route to success…success has many routes to it so find your path and you can only be good at being yourself and not at being someone else
What was the most discouraging moment you experienced? I can say I have had my fair share of failures but for me I chose to use it as an opportunity to learn so I always get back up dust myself off and continue.
What was the biggest obstacle you faced, and how did you overcome it? When I was in college working part-time I didn’t make alot of money and so I had to work with what I had to start my company which meant that I had to make alot of sacrifices but now I look back and I am proud of that.I overcame it by being a good financial planner and focusing on my future goals and not my current situation.
What was the most challenging part of being an entrepreneur? Most people think that being an entrepreneur is easy but it isn’t I went through many years without pay and perfecting my skills knowing that my time was coming and it took alot of persistence,self belief and focus to get to where I am. I had to build alot endurance in myself.
How did this new entrepreneurship enter your mind for the first time? My plan was to go to college, graduate get a well paying job etc that was my plan but once I got into the real world I realized I had to play my cards differently and that’s when I chose to start my own company.
What makes your brand special? We really care about our clients and their success and we want to see them win. The look on their faces when they do it’s priceless and it feels even better knowing that we were a part of their journey.
Why did you chose to go into public relations? Because it was a field that fascinated me and I knew I would be good at it. I could do it exceptionally well with the least amount of effort
Who is your role model? Definitely my mum Rose Keitany she has always been an independent woman who got her own
What motivates you? My daughter Leilani Bett does…. I want to inspire her just like my mum inspires me every day and that makes me want to push harder.
Where do you see yourself in the next 10 years? I see my company being an international company and I see myself with a successful talk show and pr company under my belt
What advise do you have for young people who wish to venture into pr? I would advise them to figure out their strengths which it what they do the best with the least amount of effort and do it. I would also advise them to follow their passion and do what they love.
Name one exciting thing that has happened this year? My daughter has started losing her baby teeth and her permanent teeth are coming in just seeing that whole process is fascinating cause she’s growing up so fast it’s actually really amazing to watch her grow up
What do you do during your free time? I spend time with my family. I am always at my mum’s house or my aunt’s house I love my family and I can’t get enough of them
